According to the latest HIV incidence data released by Singapore’s health ministry, homosexual transmission accounted for 25% of the new infections in 2005. While this is a marginal increase of 2% from 2004, it is a cause for concern for the community.
To play our part in a collaborative community effort against HIV/AIDS, SGBOY.COM will be spearheading a bilingual campaign with the tagline ‘Protect Him, Protect Yourself’ and a Mandarin seminar on 20 and 27 June to get gay men to take personal responsibility for their own sexual health.
The collateral depicts a dagger wrapped in a condom dangled over an open palm, reflecting the danger of playing with a ‘dangerous weapon’. The campaign hopes to appeal to the collective identity of the gay community, and to persuade gay men to think of how HIV/AIDS affects them and others they come in contact with.
HIV transmission through sexual contact is not an individual activity. Therefore we believe that for any HIV/AIDS campaign to be effective, it requires a responsible collective action within the community to protect each other. The tagline reflects the positive message that when you look out for the safety of your partner, you are protecting yourself in the process.
Flyers and posters will be distributed at several gay establishments and gay-friendly retailers. To ensure that Mandarin speakers in the MSM community are not missed out, all printed collaterals will be bilingual and for the first time an MSM Mandarin seminar will be held.
In collaboration with Oogachaga, the free admission MSM mandarin seminar will be held on 20 and 27 in June 06. There will be insights on risks of HIV, how it is transmitted unknowingly, as well as the importance of using a condom, even among regular sex partners. Participants will also be engaged in an exploratory session on fun and kinky ways of using a condom.
Date: 20 and 27 June 2006
